We love traveling by ferry. Whether its a local city ferry trip across the river, or a longer distance ferry to an island, or even an international trip, we love being near the water, especially in warm weather.
Here we provide trip reports on a number of recent ferries we've taken, from the free Staten Island Ferry in New York and a couple of other New York local ferries, to a multi–leg commute around Sydney Harbour (yes, that is the correct spelling for Australia), some more lengthy interstate trips on the Cape May and Port Jeff ferries serving the New York area, and some ferries in some other global tourist area — Maui to Lanai in the State of Hawaii, and Athens to Aegina in Greece. We hope to build this page over time as we undertake more trips. Welcome aboard!
The Port Jeff Ferry runs between Bridgeport Connecticut and Port Jefferson on Long Island. It is a vehicle ferry with space for around 120 vehicles and 1,000 passengers. It could be described as quaint. Shabby is another word for it.
We take the Expeditions Ferry from Lahaina port in Maui to the island of Lanai. This is a reasonably cheap day trip to get away from the busy Maui tourist scene. This is one of the cheapest excursions in Hawaii!
This video was filmed before the Lahaina fires. This ferry now departs from the Maalaea port
The Cape May vehicle ferry goes between Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes in Delaware. There are multiple departures per day. Its a pleasant way to get to Delaware instead of having to commute in traffic on I-95
We catch a Greek ferry from Piraeus (the port for Athens) to the nearby island of Aegina. This is an easy day trip, and with plenty of time for lunch and sightseeing. Cost is very reasonable and the ferry is comfortable. Trip was done in the off-season (November 2021). Although the tourist season was over, it was still a great day trip from Athens, and possibly more enjoyable because there were no crowds.
Sightseeing in Manhattan and the Bronx on the Soundview Ferry. Cheap sightseeing in New York. For only $5.50 per person, travel up the East River to the Bronx and back.
Take a cheap New York cruise from Lower Manhattan to Rockaway for just $2.75 (each way). Get to the fabulous beaches at Rockaway and beyond, or even get to JFK in an unconventional way.
We spend a summer day taking the Staten Island Ferry from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island, passing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Brooklyn and New Jersey. We have splendid views of the financial district as well. This is New York's best value excursion, because its completely free. A great family outing in New York City (NYC)
Don’t listen to the touts at the port. It’s free, there’s nothing to pay, and none of that is changing soon!
We take a day trip from Ft Lauderdale, Florida to Bimini in the Bahamas on the modern Jaume II, the Balearic Ferries catamaran (or is it a trimaran). The main hull doesn't seem to go in the water, so I'm not quite sure. This ferry is also known as the “fast ferry” to Bahamas.
A pleasant day trip to the beach and casino at Bimini Hilton Resorts World hotel
We take two different ferries around Sydney Harbour for sightseeing. We get great views of the Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and all the sights on the way from Pyrmont to Double Bay. We use the F4 and F7 ferries. Absolutely the cheapest way to see the sights of Sydney Harbour
We make a short excursion to Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. The island was a prison from 1839 to 1869, and was then a maintenance facility for the Royal Australian Navy until the 1990's. This is a great trip to catch all the sights on the harbour.
