My first international trip was in 1981 when I flew from Perth, Australia to Singapore. The Lonely Planet had just one publication - South East Asia on a Shoestring and I think it was the second edition I had. It was my guide to a whole new world. I've never lost my love of travel! Back then, I had time but no money. Then I made a career, and had money not time. Now I'm aiming to have both, and to share some of the experience.
We have lived and worked as expats and locals in Australia, Europe, Asia and North America over decades. When we travel, we try, as much as possible to take a local perspective. This does not mean we don't visit the tourist sights, but we believe there's as much to see and do as a local, and it is usually more personally rewarding. Its not always possible of course!
We help you travel the world independently! We cover independent travel by Plane, Train and Ferry, and even include independently arranged museums and tours. Please scroll through our site, play the videos you like and hopefully you'll find the guides interesting enough. We continue to add content all the time.
At Travel with Mark we aim to provide pragmatic advice for travel and unbiased insights on real travel experiences. We are very experienced travelers and you won't find us on Instagram pulling crazy stunts just to get noticed. We live our experiences and try to properly experience all this beautiful world has to offer.
We are OK with 5 star luxury, desert camping, a chicken bus in Panama or anything in between. We keep our wits about us when we travel, and try to get good value for money.
I'm often asked where is my favourite place, and I honestly cannot think of just one, and its the same with my food. I love food, whether is haute cuisine in London, New York or Paris, or more rustic Italian or Spanish in those countries (or wherever its been adapted to). I cook, and have a deep appreciation for Asian food, even while I appreciate that that could mean many different things. I make a pretty passable rendang daging Indonesian/Malay coconut beef curry, and a very good Italian panna cotta. I don't particularly like exotic foods like insects, or uncommon body parts but also appreciate that some people may. I've been to a dog meat market in Indonesia (and have the photos to prove it) but I prefer not to eat ‘uncommon’ foods.
Hopefully I can share some of my experience and it will be helpful to fellow travelers.
